The mythical universe has horizontal
lines as well as a vertical structure.
Ancient traditions throughout much of
the world speak of the four quarters,
which correspond to the cardinal points:
east, west, north and south, as the funda-
mental divisions of horizontal space.
The Tibetan mandala is a pictorial
representation of the same idea. A
further “direction”- the centre or “here”
- is added, giving fve divisions, as in
China, Ireland and North and Central
America. In these traditions the centre
was at times considered to include the
two vertical directions: up and down, so
that the universe was given six spatial
dimensions.
